Sponsored Projects Redesign Update May 2020

Sponsored Projects Redesign Initiative

During the California Stay-at-Home order, and the curtailment of many campus operations, SPO Redesign Initiative continues to move forward.  As mentioned in our previous communication, the Sponsored Projects Redesign Initiative closed out our first process models of the Award Lifecycle, Identify Opportunity and Develop and Submit.  We have now added Accept Award to our list of completed process models.  The process maps and detailed documentation for this focus area have been completed down to the task level.  In addition, a draft of the training deck is ready for leadership and instructor review.  Our next steps are to review the Accept Award process model with our change agents for input and final confirmation.  We will conclude the Pre-Award phase by finalizing a strategy and schedule for training delivery.

Our next phase will be reviewing the non-financial activities within the Post Award process models by refining the process maps, creating detailed documentation for each step and concurrently developing training materials to complete the Award Lifecycle.  As we refine and build upon our process maps, we will work in coordination with our change agents and ORED leadership eliciting feedback to incorporate into the finalized models.  If you would like to view a high-level glance of the progress of the project team or have any foundational questions concerning the project, a project status and FAQ are both available on the Sponsored Projects Redesign Initiative webpage.

ORED Improvement Updates

ORED continues to push forward meeting the growing demands of proposal requests during these challenging times.  In particular, SPO has given priority to all COVID-19 related proposals and has developed specific guidance around the COVID-19 pandemic.  Below are a few other highlights in the growth and improvement of ORED operations put in place to better serve the research community. 

  • Two new personnel were hired
  • An independent consultant, Artawood Chitamitara, will begin work revamping the SPO website
